Is Stainless Steel Safe for Cats?

Yes. 304-grade stainless steel is the same material used in commercial kitchens, surgical instruments, and food preparation equipment. It's non-toxic, non-leaching, and approved for food contact. Halo is free of BPA, PVC, and the petroleum-based plasticizers commonly found in plastic litter boxes. Every edge is hand-polished to a smooth, paw-safe finish with no burrs or sharp seams.

Why does 304 Grade Stainless Steel Matter for Litter Boxes?

Unlike plastic, 304-grade stainless steel is non-porous, highly durable, and naturally resistant to odors, stains, and bacteria buildup. It’s the same premium material used in commercial kitchens, medical environments, and food preparation equipment. Because it doesn’t absorb urine or develop deep scratches over time, it stays cleaner, fresher, and easier to maintain than traditional plastic litter boxes.

Every edge is hand-polished for a smooth, seamless finish that’s safe for paws, easy to clean, and built to last.

Why Do Veterinarians Recommend Larger Litter Boxes?

The American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) recommend litter boxes that are at least 1.5 times the length of your cat. Unfortunately, many commercial litter boxes fall short of that recommendation. Cats need enough room to turn comfortably, dig naturally, and eliminate without feeling cramped.

When litter boxes are too small, it can contribute to discomfort, litter box avoidance, and accidents outside the box. Halo was designed around modern feline welfare recommendations, with spacious circular interiors that give cats the room they need to move naturally.

Halo Classic provides 18 inches of usable interior diameter, giving most cats ample room to turn, dig, and eliminate comfortably.

Halo XL expands that space to 23 inches, making it ideal for larger breeds such as Maine Coons, as well as multi-cat households.

Halo Extra Tall maintains the same spacious 18-inch diameter as Halo Classic while adding 16-inch walls for cats that spray, stand while urinating, or kick litter aggressively.

Why Is a Round Litter Box Better?

Cats naturally move in circles when investigating, digging, and covering waste. Unlike rectangular boxes with restrictive corners, Halo’s circular design provides continuous turning space and allows cats to move more naturally. The shape also eliminates hard-to-clean corners, making scooping and maintenance easier for owners.

Why Doesn’t Stainless Steel Hold Odors Like Plastic?

Plastic develops microscopic scratches over time that trap bacteria, urine residue, and odor-causing compounds. Stainless steel is non-porous and far more resistant to scratching, making it easier to clean thoroughly and less likely to retain odors between washings. Many customers notice a significant reduction in litter box smells after switching from plastic.

Is a Stainless Steel Litter Box Worth It?

For many cat owners, yes. Stainless steel litter boxes resist odors, don’t stain, clean easily, and can last for years without needing replacement. While the initial investment is higher than plastic, many owners find they save money over time by avoiding frequent replacements while enjoying a cleaner and more attractive litter box.

Why Did We Choose 304 Stainless Steel Instead of Cheaper Alternatives?

Not all stainless steel is created equal. We chose premium 304-grade stainless steel because it offers superior resistance to corrosion, moisture, odors, and daily wear. Cheaper grades may look similar initially but can be more susceptible to discoloration, corrosion, or reduced longevity over time.

Why Do Cats Need More Space Than Most Litter Boxes Provide?

Many litter boxes sold today are designed around shelf space rather than feline comfort. Cats prefer room to turn, dig, cover waste, and reposition naturally. Providing adequate space helps support healthy litter box habits and creates a more comfortable experience for your cat.

Can The Right Litter Box Help Prevent Accidents Outside The Box?

While no litter box can solve every behavioral issue, providing sufficient space, easy access, and a clean environment can help encourage consistent litter box use. Many litter box problems stem from discomfort, poor hygiene, or inadequate sizing, all areas where Halo was intentionally designed to excel.

How Big Should a Litter Box Be for My Cat?

The American Association of Feline Practitioners recommends that a litter box be at least 1.5 times the length of your cat, measured from nose to base of tail. For an average 10-inch cat, that means a minimum 15-inch interior length. For a 14-inch cat (typical of larger breeds like Maine Coons), the recommendation is at least 21 inches.

Halo Classic provides 18 inches of interior diameter, comfortable for most average-sized cats.

Halo XL provides 23 inches of interior diameter, accommodating larger breeds and multi-cat households.

Halo Extra Tall offers the Classic 18-inch diameter with higher walls for cats that kick litter or spray.

What’s The Difference Between Halo, Halo XL, and Halo Extra Tall?

Halo offers a compact footprint with generous interior space.

Halo XL provides substantially more room for larger cats and multi-cat households.

Halo Extra Tall features higher walls to improve containment while maintaining the same premium stainless steel construction.

How Many Litter Boxes Do I Need for Multiple Cats?

Veterinary guidelines recommend one litter box per cat, plus one extra. This is often called the "N+1 rule."

  • 1 cat = 2 litter boxes
  • 2 cats = 3 litter boxes
  • 3 cats = 4 litter boxes
  • 4 cats = 5 litter boxes

Multiple boxes reduce territorial behavior, prevent crowding, and give each cat consistent access. For households with three or more cats, Halo XL is often the better fit because the additional interior space helps prevent crowding when cats share a box.

What Is The Best Litter Box For Maine Coons and Large Cats?

Absolutely. Halo XL was designed with larger breeds in mind and provides significantly more turning space than most standard litter boxes. It’s a popular choice among Maine Coon, Norwegian Forest Cat, Siberian, and Ragdoll owners.

What Is The Best Litter Box For Multiple Cats?

For most multi-cat households, Halo XL is the preferred option due to its increased interior space.

Larger litter boxes help reduce crowding and provide a more comfortable experience for cats sharing litter resources.

What Is The Best Litter Box For Cats That Spray?

If your cat sprays high on the walls, urinates standing up, or aggressively kicks litter, Halo Extra Tall provides additional containment with its 16-inch wall height while maintaining the same easy-to-clean stainless steel construction.

How Much Litter Does Each Halo Hold?

Litter depth is ultimately a personal preference, but most owners maintain 2 to 4 inches of litter. Halo’s generous dimensions allow cats to dig comfortably while providing ample litter capacity.

Can Kittens Use A Stainless Steel Litter Box?

Yes. Most kittens can comfortably use Halo, although very young kittens may initially benefit from a lower entry option until they gain confidence.

Many owners purchase Halo once and continue using it throughout their cat’s life.

What's Included with my Halo Litter Box?

Each Halo includes the stainless steel litter box, premium stainless steel scoop with wood handle, bamboo lid, EVA litter trapping mat, silicone handles, non-slip feet, and our care guide.

How Do I Clean a Stainless Steel Litter Box?

Simply empty the litter, wash with warm water and mild soap, rinse thoroughly, and dry.

Most owners find Halo significantly easier to clean than plastic because it doesn’t absorb odors or stains.

What Cleaning Products Should I Use On A Stainless Steel Litter Box?

We recommend mild dish soap or castile soap for routine cleaning. For deeper cleaning, Bar Keepers Friend can help maintain the stainless steel finish. Avoid steel wool, abrasive pads, or harsh chemicals.

Where Should I Put My Cat's Litter Box?

Choose a location that's quiet, low-traffic, and easy for your cat to access. Avoid placing the box near food and water bowls, in laundry rooms with loud appliances, or in spots where other pets or children might disturb your cat mid-use.

In multi-story homes, consider one litter box per floor. In multi-cat households, place boxes in separate locations rather than side by side. Cats tend to view two adjacent boxes as one shared resource, which defeats the purpose of having multiple boxes.

Halo's clean design means you don't need to hide it. Many owners place it in visible areas like bathrooms or laundry nooks because it integrates with the room rather than detracting from it.

Why Won't My Cat Use the Litter Box?

Litter box avoidance usually stems from one of four causes:

  1. The box is too small. Cats need room to turn, dig, and cover. Boxes smaller than 1.5 times the cat's body length often lead to avoidance.
  2. The box isn't clean enough. Cats have a strong sense of smell and may refuse a box that retains odors. Plastic boxes hold residual odor far longer than stainless steel because of their porous surface.
  3. The location is stressful. High-traffic areas, loud appliances nearby, or proximity to food and water can all cause avoidance.
  4. There aren't enough boxes. Without enough litter boxes in a multi-cat home, dominant cats may block access for others.

Halo's spacious circular design and non-porous stainless steel construction address the first two causes directly. If avoidance continues after switching to a larger, easier-to-clean box, consult your veterinarian to rule out underlying health issues such as urinary tract infections, kidney issues, or arthritis.

How Often Should I Clean My Litter Box?

For daily care, scoop solid waste and clumps once or twice per day. This is the single most important factor in preventing odor and avoidance.

For deep cleaning, empty the box completely, wash with mild soap and warm water, rinse, and dry thoroughly every 2 to 4 weeks. Halo's non-porous 304 stainless steel makes this faster than cleaning plastic because nothing absorbs into the surface.

If you notice a stronger odor between deep cleanings, your litter may need to be replaced more frequently, or you may need to scoop more often.

Does a Stainless Steel Litter Box Rust?

Halo is made from premium 304-grade stainless steel, a material known for its excellent resistance to rust, corrosion, and daily exposure to moisture. Under normal household use, your Halo should not rust.

Not all stainless steel litter boxes use the same grade of steel. Some lower-cost alternatives may use less corrosion-resistant materials that can be more susceptible to staining, discoloration, or rust over time. That’s one of the reasons we chose premium 304 stainless steel for every Halo litter box.

How Long Will a Halo Last?

With normal use and care, Halo is designed to last for many many years. Unlike plastic litter boxes that crack, stain, and absorb odors over time, stainless steel maintains its appearance and performance far longer.

What is the Best Litter to Use With a Stainless Steel Litter Box?

One of the benefits of a stainless steel litter box is that it works well with virtually any type of cat litter. Whether you prefer clay, clumping, crystal, pine, paper, tofu, or cassava litter, Halo is designed to handle them all.

The best litter is ultimately the one that works best for your cat, your home, and your cleaning routine. That said, we generally prefer low-dust options because they help keep both the litter box and surrounding area cleaner.

Our personal favorites are tofu and cassava litters. They’re naturally low dust, highly absorbent, easy to scoop, and pair exceptionally well with stainless steel. But no matter which litter you choose, Halo’s non-porous 304 stainless steel construction won’t absorb odors or trap residue the way plastic can.
